Personal robot:


      Robots will be a necessary element of our life very soon. GIST scientists believe that human-like robots will be out of options on streets within next 50 years. First personal robots will be dog-size and dog-like robotic systems that can be popular as personal assistant. This assistant can be especially useful for children, elderly or disable people.

      GIST scientists develop the design for "Personal Robot" (PR) on base of novel combination of multi-wheeled platform and elements of multi-legged systems. PR will have perfect ability for robust and safety locomotion in city and home.
List of abilities and parameters of Universal Robot according by GIST design:

a. 

Size. Length is 2-2.5 feet. Height is variable: 2-4 feet. Center of mass is low enough for any heights. The length and height of PR are parameters that strictly determined by a shape of typical stair. Width of PR is ~ 1 feet. Sizes of PR must be close to a suitcase.

b. 

Mobility on stairs. Robotic locomotion on stairs was big challenge during long time and PR design effectively solves this problem: Personal Robot can move safely on any type of stairs (with slope < 45 degree) including moving escalators in malls and metro.

c. 

General mobility and independence. This robot can move in any urban place and some human help is necessary only for opening of doors and some control (hand on the back) for robot in dangerous or crowded areas (exactly on level of human help and control for usual dog). Sidewalks, holes in asphalt, rocks or barriers up to 2 feet is not a problem for PR. Personal Robot can go to door of a sedan or to rear door of a SUV. Locomotion ability of PR for lawn, wetland, sand, snow, bushes is typical or better than ability of usual vehicle with small wheels. Robot can move to any directions without any turns. Good sample of locomotion ability and safety of Personal Robot: during locomotion PR can not step on a human foot in a crowd (ideal for barmen/waitress duty on a busy party).

d. 

Safety. Level of safety during locomotion of PR on stairs or other types of urban areas is best from theoretical possible. Fall of PR due to accidents have same danger level as fall of suitcase.

e. 

Energy efficiency. On the smooth surfaces PR use energy as usual wheeled vehicle. Locomotion on stairs takes more energy just due to lift of weight of robot.

f. 

Navigation. LIDAR system is absolutely necessary for navigation of PR. Software for navigation system will be developed by GIST scientists.


Possible Applications of the Personal Robot include:

- Personal robots, that can follow human during everyday activity in any urban places: a shopping mall, an office, a party, a golf club, a school. Payload can be 20-40 lbs. PR can be equipped with wireless link (phone, internet) and laptop. PR will be useful as business assistant inside and outside office and can be used as personal photographer and automated video recorder;
- PR can be a guard and assistant for children, elderly or blind people in home and streets. Using own sensors (LIDAR, video, IR–cameras) can recognize dangerous situations and using wireless link can call to police (ambulance, firefighters, parents);
- Advanced vacuum-cleaner, lawn-mover and waitress. One from many possible projects for PR is a robo-cafe where customers will be served by robots. A project of robo-cafe can be attractive for investments from large companies of food-industry.

Details of design of the Personal Robot considered by GIST as proprietary information and can be demonstrated after signing of a teaming agreement and NDA.
